As a result of a civil war that raged for many years, many children have been orphaned in Sri Lanka. Then after the great Tsunami that battered the coast of Sri Lanka in 2004 destroyed many villages and left tens of thousands dead, the need to care for orphans became even greater.
One of our World Family Foundation sponsors, originally from Sri Lanka, connected us with a Sri Lankan doctor who runs an orphanage called Singithi Sevana Children's Home, in the city of Kandy, a beautiful hill station in central Sri Lanka. Their mission statement is "Be a refuge unto others." The orphanage asked us to partner with them and create a special sponsorship program for some of their children. See Photos
Most of the children are brought to the orphanage at a very young age, and girls can stay only until they are 12 years old. After that, they must move to a poorly run government facility. The orphanage asked for help with funds to keep the girls with academic potential longer. World Family Foundation now sponsors these girls so that they can continue to live at the Kandy orphanage, the only home they have ever known, all the way through high school and college. Their sponsorship continues by helping to pay for their education and living costs while they attend college.
The older girls who stay on at Kandy help with the care of the younger ones. Because of their influence, the younger children now sense a new possibility for their futures - that they too can one day go to college if they work hard at school.
We currently sponsor three girls in high school who are preparing for college. We also sponsor two little ones who have the potential for going to college later on. To sponsor a child click here.
